In Honour of The Man Whose Name I Will Never Know.

Shams_THATFISHBLOG

A year ago today the heart stopped beating of a man I tried to save. He was taken by the Ocean I love so dearly. He was a stranger and I will never know his name but his legacy lives on in a way I never foresaw. I wrote this poem in the middle of the night as a way of processing the flashbacks I had. The name I now call the young man came to me that night. I have named him Shams, the Arabic word for sun.

My life changed irreversibly the day I held Shams in my arms. What I have gained in the year since his death is unforgettable. When you witness a young life being taken you are reminded to notice the beauty in each day, no matter how small or insignificant.

June 16th will forever be the day Shams breathed life into mine.

This is in honour of you Shams, may I never forgot to notice the sun breaking through even the darkest of days.

Amy, what a lovely sentiment. I don’t only feel sorry for his family, but also for you. Im sure it must have been a very difficult year but I think if anybody is capable of finding meaning in such a sad situation and cherishing life afterwords, it’s you. You’re such a lovely, positive person and I hope you always manage to find the beauty in each day πŸ™‚ and what an important reminder that we should all do the same. And not to forget, not everybody would be brave enough to do what you did. Xx
